Ayr United had landed a semi-final Anglo-Scottish Cup tie against Nottingham Forest after a controversial win over Newcastle United in the quarter final.

Forest were always to strong for Ayr although only won the first leg at the by 2-1 with Johnny Graham being Ayr's scorer. 
1976 Home Tie
That was the only goal of the tie for United as Forest won 2-0 at Ayr on 3rd November 1976.
