Port Glasgow Athletic provided Ayr United with their first ever competitive match, a 2nd division clash at Somerset Park on 20th August 1910.
Around 2,500 watched this first league encounter. However, the United players were not over keen to score Ayr's first ever league goal as Charlie Phillips missed a penalty.
Archie Campbell did finally score that historic goal in 39 minutes. Howe scored a second in a 2-0 win.
The return match on 1st October ended with a 1-0 defeat for United.
