Ayr can include Darrian MacKinnon against league leaders Queen of the South at Somerset Park.
The striker has joined on loan from Hamilton.
The Honest Men are hoping defenders John Robertson and Ryan McStay will return after injury, but player- manager Mark Roberts, Michael McGowan, Martyn Campbell and Anthony Marenghi are all injured and Adam Hunter is banned.
Roberts, who is hoping to fix up a defensive loan signing ahead of kick-off said: "We are not in the best of shape for going up against a team in form but if the players give a real sleeves-rolled-up performance requested from them then we can take something form this game.
"A win would get our season going in a positive direction."
Queen of the South manager Allan Johnston has a fully-fit squad for the trip.
Derek Lyle has returned to training for the top versus bottom encounter at Somerset Park.
Despite the length of the league separating the sides the leaders will not be taking anything for granted.
Johnston said: "We are only a few games into the season and Ayr will come good so we will not be underestimating the challenge facing us at all.
"Our players were fantastic in our last game when we beat Arbroath 6-0 and have been looking to play this game every day since so they are desperate to get going again which is a really good sign."
