As Ayr and Queens Park prepare for the Boxing Day match at Somerset Park, United can look to an average of over 2 goals a game at Somerset Park over the years against the Glasgow club.
One of the highest aggregates occurred on 17th August 1921 in a 1st division match at Hampden Park when Ayr won by 6-1. The home leg on 5th November 1921 was less explosive, Ayr winning by a solitary goal.
The legendary Jimmy Smith scored against 'the Spiders' on 20th October 1928 scoring the first but witnessing an extraordinary second for Ayr. Billy Brae had beat a serious of Queen's players before cutting in an netting with a superb oblique shot just before half time.
Danny Tolland and Jimmy Smith again made it 4 for United with the shine being taken off by a two late consolation goals for Queen's.
Season 1933/34 brought about another high aggregate scorer season with Queens Park winning both, by 5-4 on 7th October 1933 at Hampden Park and then a scintillating 6-2 win at Ayr on 24th February 1934.
The following season was won of high scores for and against all round for Ayr and they suffered another 5-4 defeat to the Spiders on 19th January 1935 having won however but a huge 5-1 at Somerset park previously on 22nd September 1934. It was Ayr who were banging in the six goals in a 6-1 home win on 21st August 1937 in a 1st division match.
Ayr have played some interesting and historic games at Queen's Park but non more so than on 31st October 1953 - it was the 50th Anniversary of the national stadium. The occasion was celebrated only by a routine 'B; division match against Ayr who paid little attention to the history. Jim Fraser and Gordon Finnie shared the goals in Ayr's 4-2 win. The match programme - opposite - was regarded as a truly wonderful programme. Only 4,000 fans turned up to watch, but in that crowd were the only four survivors of the 22 who had played in that first match at Hampden Park 50 years earlier.
On 20th April 1957 the teams fought out a 4-4 draw at Somerset Park in a 1st division encounter in a season which saw Ayr relegated.
The clubs were both in the 2nd division when they next met, Ayr winning 3-2 at home on 5th October 1958. However, when Ayr turned up for the match at Hampden on 24th January 1959 they had three McIntyre's in their line up. Alastair and Willie were already regulars when George, a trialist from Kirkintilloch, took the field. Alastair scored twice in Ayr's 4-0 win and George signed on the dotted line after the game.
Ayr's promotion separated the teams until season 1961/62 when Ayr won 1-0 at home and 2-1 away. It was Queen's who won both fixtures for the next few seasons, including a 2-1 win at Hampden Park on 1st January 1965 when Eddie Moore scored Ayr's solitary goal.
Ayr next won on 16th October 1965 3-0 at Hampden Park and 2-0 at Somerset Park on 12th February 1966. Ayr lost at home on 9th March 1968 by 3-1 having won a hard fought 1-1 draw on 11th November 1967. The following season was one of away wins, Queen's sensationally winning 5-1 at Somerset Park on 21st September 1968 but Ayr taking a 3-0 win at Hampden Park on 4th January 1969 on their way to second place and promotion to Division 1.
It was not until season 1981/82 that the clubs met again in a revamped Division 1 with Ayr 2-0 at home whilst losing 2-0 and drawing 0-0 in the away fixtures. Big scores were not as common in the 1980's but Ayr did record a 4-0 win at Somerset Park on 30th April 1983, Queens having already win 3-1 in Glasgow and securing a 2-2 draw in the third encounter of the season.
It was four again for Ayr in their promotion winning season of 1987/88 as they recorded a 4-1 win at Ayr on 26th September 1987. The season also saw a 2-0 win for Ayr at Hampden on 21st November 1987 and a 3-2 Scottish Cup in Glasgow on 9th January 1988. Queens Park managed to salvage a 1-1 draw at Somerset Park on 20th February 1988.
It was 20 years before the clubs met again on league business, but they did meet in an almost deserted Hampden Park for the a Scottish League Cup tie on 1st August 1998 which Ayr won by 3-1.
The clubs met at Queen's Park hallowed turf in a pre-season friendly played on 25th July 2001 which the Honest Men won 3-0.
Season 2007/08 saw the clubs on Division Two league business. The newly promoted Spiders beat United on 11th August 2007 by 3-2 in front of 1,265 fans. Michael Moore thought he had gien Ayr a point after scoring in 84 minutes but United failed to clear their lies and allowed Queen's a 90th minute winner.
It was a Christmas draw at 1-1 at Hampden Park on 26th December 2007, however, Ayr stole the seasons' advantage by winning by 3-1 on 26th January 2008 at Ayr and on 19 April 2008, they ran out cosy 3-1 winners at Hampden Park.
Ayr have the advantage in season 2008/09 by winning 2-1 at Somerset Park on On 30th August 2008 and a superb 3-0 at Hampden Park on 15th November 2008.
United's defeat at Peterhead last weekend means that nothing less than a win on Boxing Day will suffice.
