Ayr Salvage Point In Title Battle

Ayr United fought back from two goals down to hold Second Division leaders Raith Rovers to a draw.

Raith had travelled to Ayr in confident mood having never conceded a goal at Somerset Park during the reign of manager John McGlynn's but his side had won only one of their last four on the road, having lost to both Stirling Albion and Peterhead in recent weeks.

AYR United have recently closed the gap on the Kirkcaldy side over the last few weeks afer postponements due to aether and United's cup explits over SPL neighburs Kilmarnock. Ayr sat just five points behind with two games in hand before this table topping clash at Somerset Prk.

It was the visitors who took the lead after six minutes when Mark Campbell headed home from a corner and Mark Ferry fired in Rovers' into a senstional 2-0 lead three minutes later.

However, Ayr pulled a goal back on the half-hour mark when Ryan Stevenson's shot was diverted into the net by Rovers captain Iain Davidson.

Ayr United drew on their rengths of recovery this season and pushed the Fifers hard to draw level through a Scott Agnew header 71 minutes.

The draw is probably more welcome to Ayr than Rovers' as it maintains Ayr's advantage of beng five points behind with two matches in hand.
