Stranraer need only a point from next week's game against Morton at Stair Park to clinch promotion for the second successive season.
Neil Watt's men moved to the brink of their dream with a hard-fought goalless draw against Ayr in a dour derby that never really came to life.
Stranraer failed to take their chances in a dismal first half, with the best coming after 14 minutes. Ex Ayr man Lee Sharp fired in a free- kick which Darren Henderson headed goalwards, but Ayr's Ludovic Roy pulled of a superb save.
The Frenchman also did well to tip over a header from Gary McPhee which looked like dropping in underneath the bar. Ayr's only chance in the opening period came when Stuart Boyd raced clear of the visitors defence, but keeper Michael McGovern dashed off his line to clear the danger.
Ayr were much livelier in the second half, and young substitute Robert Burgess twice went close with headers which were only inches off target.
Roy saved the day for Ayr with a good save from a curling shot from Paul McManus as Stranraer tried in vain to make the breakthrough.
Ayr finished with a flurry, and Andy Ferguson went close with a back-heeler which drifted just wide. They could have won it in the dying seconds, but Andrew Reid shot weakly at the keeper when he should have done much better.
