Ayr hit back for a point thanks to Paul Hyslop's first senior goal after signing from junior side Auchinleck Talbot in the summer.
The winger struck after 59 minutes, blasting the ball high into the roof of the net after substitute Craig Conway had picked him out with a superb crossfield pass.
Ayr had started the better side with skipper Raymond Logan twice pounding in headers from Hyslop corners only for keeper Paul Mathers to pull off fine saves on the line.
Peterhead survived then stung Ayr with a goal out of the blue a minute before the break. Mark Perry and Keith Gibson combined and Dougie Cameron turned inside the box to slam home a sweet shot.
Hyslop's equaliser after 51 minutes prompted an all-out assault from the home side, and Chris Robertson went close to the winner with a left-foot shot that flew just past the post.
Two minutes from time Robertson went close again when he got his head to a Conway free-kick but guided the ball just wide.
Ayr boss Robert Connor said: "I'm disappointed not to win the game, but although we had a few chances we didn't dominate possession as much as I would have liked.
"I felt we were a bit careless at times, although conditions were sticky."
Peterhead boss Iain Stewart said: "In the first half we were worth our lead and we scored a tidy goal with three great passes. It was an unbelievable finish from the Ayr boy that gave them an equaliser, and in fairness they put us under a bit of pressure."
