Ayr United lost there second pre-season encounter against Stenhousemuir at Stirling University last night (14th July). It wasnt the result that annoyed the large number of Ayr fans who made the trip to
Stirling, it was that they went there expecting to see the first team squad play.
Instead the supporters were treated to the reserve team whilst the first team were back in Ayr training, the exception being Wardlaw who needed match practice after missing the trip to Annan because he was at a wedding.
This was arranged and apparently advertised as a first team fixture and Stenhousemuir even produced a programme for the event. Many would not have travelled had they known that United were pugtting out a team of reserve and trialist players.
The Squirrelhunters had even booked a bus!
With a fairly strong Stenny squad including Michael Renwick, Stevie, Kerrigan, Willie McCulloch, Jim Mercer, Greg Denham and Paul McGrillen. The United travelling support actually knew more Stenhousemuir players than Ayr players!
Ayr lost the match, played at Stirling University because Stenhousemuir are putting in a plastic picth at Ochilview, 5-3 with Wardlaw scoring twice for the Honest Men.
